No, sorry for my lateness.  I'm going to start off with a post soon.  I'll try to do it tonight!

Teleportation!
Your boss, a female Elf by the name of Devonian, has been studying a network of teleportation chambers.  These are known by governments and academics, but not so much by the general public.  The network of chambers was created by unknown ancients many millenia ago.  There have always been eight known locations, but recently a ninth was discovered from here in Acadamia.  Devonian is investigating the new one.

Each chamber is a small circular room with a "Control Panel" on the wall.  There is a viewing plate, used for viewing a remote chamber before traveling to it.  Below the viewing plate is an oval button about 2 inches wide, with an eye symbol on it.  Below it is circle of nine oval buttons, each about 1 inch wide and with a unique symbol on it.  Nobody knows the meanings of these 9 symbols, but they are the same in each chamber.  They have, by convention, been labeled 1 through 9, starting at the one o'clock position where the first one is (it's 20 degrees off vertical, with another at every further 40 degrees).  For simplicity, let's call the list of symbols, 1 through 9 as follows: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *, (.  Below this set of 9 symbols is one more two inch button, this one with an image of a one-sided arrow on it.

You use the chamber by pressing on each of the nine symbol buttons in a particular order.  The order is the key to one of the other locations.  If you then press the Eye button, the viewing plate will gradually change from its normal black to a window on that location's chamber, from the point of view of its viewing plate.  This can be used to check if anyone is there and thereby wait until they are done before going there.  Only vision is provided, no sound or other sensory information.  After viewing the other chamber, you can then press the Arrow button, and you will be instantly transported to that location.

The first eight locations are: 1) Acadamia, a ground floor room in the University, 2) Metral, the capital of this little-known nation, 3) Drazia, near the center of government, 4) Pquaari, somewhere in the capital, 5) The Ruins, underground in the chaotic land of the Wild Peoples, 6) Amar'el Elves on the Isle of Pilg, 7) Goblinhome, a dangerous underground location under the Pilg Mountains, northeast of Cambricon, 8) Iguania, in the capital city of the so-called Dragonslayer Gnomes.

Each of the locations has a unique symbol order, so that order can be used from any location - except that some links do not work, and nobody knows why.  The order for Acadamia is 961374528.

A few months ago a new location, currently called The Chalet, has been discovered.  This is a secret, so you must not reveal it  to anyone other than Scholars.  It is deep in the Titanwall mountains, on a high plain.  There is an ancient, beautiful house there which is abandoned but perfectly preserved.  It has been a boon for researchers, for it contains a small but impressive and unique library.  The library's books are written in an unknown, ancient script, and they are fully functional, illusionary books.  They can be studied but not taken from the library.  An effort has started, both in copying the texts, and in trying to decipher them.  Both are proving difficult, but one Scholar named Boccarino is deeply involved in both tasks.  Boccarino is a middle-aged Halfling Wizard who is an expert in ancient scripts and ciphers - these days he spends most of his time at the Chalet.

You have been going to The Chalet every week with Devonian, looking for clues.  Clues to the script Boccarino is researching, to the teleportation chambers, to the nature and origin of the Chalet's constructor and the creators of the chambers.  So far you have not found much.

Today, Zandor and Devonian had planned another trip to the Chalet.

As usual, Devonian went first, and Zandor went second.  When he arrived there Devonian was nowhere to be seen.  So he looked around, starting with the library.  Boccarino was not there, though his backpack was there and papers were strewn about one of the tables.

What do you do?

You find a few open Books (let's call the illusionary books "Books" with a capital B) on the table, mostly with text but one diagram of some sort in the margin.  The rest of the papers are strewn about in typically Boccarino fashion, a kind of ordered chaos.  He has made notes in Draconic as is the custom in Acadamia.  They're mostly about translating the text and the symbols and understanding the diagrams.  It seems magic (Comprehend Languages) didn't work on deciphering the text.  He's got some notes on tenses - it seems the old language had a lot of tenses, or so he theorized.

The diagram looks like this:

In his backpack is some packaged food, good stuff like bread, cheese, some fruits, all carefully wrapped so as to preserve them.  A half-eaten apple is on the table, too.  Also in his backpack are a notebook, some extra writing implements (ink, paper, red ink, thin graphite markers), and what looks like a potion.

Looking through the notebook, you can see Boccarino was carefully categorizing all the symbols (there seem to be thousands) and trying to find commonalities and differences.  He's done quite a bit of work on it, but the "dictionary" at the back has very few entries - he seems to have numbers figured out, and a few simple word meanings.

Zandor looks about for some clean paper and tries to trace the diagram. He doesn't want to ruin the book.

Out of Character:
Are the books illusions? as in do the seem to not be solid?

Yes, they are illusionary although they feel real.  For example, if you rip out a page just reappears in the Book.

You can find blank pages and ink to do your tracing.

Those pages look like any other pages you've seen in these books.  Lots of characters all over the place.  You're not sure which order you would read them in even if you knew their individual pronunciations or meanings.  (Think Chinese, and I'm assuming you don't know Chinese!).  There are no other diagrams on these open pages.

OOC: If you like I will create a map of the chalet, but it will take some time.

INC: You look around the Chalet.  It is a beautiful, exotic place, with architecture you don't recognize.  You guess it is of human origin, based on the size of things and the styles, even though they are all different.  Everything seems to be preserved very well, and dust-free, but most rooms seem to be empty of non-furniture items (the exception being the library).

You start on the second storey.  There is a large sitting room, with doors that open onto a balcony at the back of the house.  You go out onto the balcony and the air seems fresh, but not cold.  You are high in the mountains, and you have a breathtaking view of the mountains behind the chalet.  There is some snow there, not very far away.  Also on this storey is a water closet (bathroom) which you're familiar with because it actually works - it magically whisks away anything you put down the hole.  The thought occurs to you that if Boccarino or Devonian went down there, what would become of them?  But the hole is too small even for the Halfling.  There are a few bedrooms on this storey too, with low beds (human sized) and large, empty cupboards where things were presumably kept.  One of the bedrooms has a small balcony which looks over the front of the chalet.  It is an even more spectacular and breathtaking view, for you are at the top of a long valley.  You can see about forty feet of a path that leads from the chalet.  At that point, it simply disappears, replaced with rock and small shrubs.    You seem to be looking south, and what are presumably the Titanwall mountains stretch away from you to infinity.  The valley you are looking upon is a high mountain valley, with a river you can see, and forests and meadows.  It's a clear day, and your Elven eyes see a small plume of smoke off in the distance - many miles away, that is.  You know these mountains are full of ogres, trolls and giants, so that smoke might not offer much comfort.  You go back inside and the only thing left is the wide, marble and granite staircase leading down.  All in all, a fairly luxurious floor.

The first floor (and only other one) contains a large kitchen suitable for several servants' use.  There is a large dining room, and next to it a large parlour with glass doors leading to a very big patio made of stone.  At the edge of the patio you see a young mountain squirrel go to jump up onto the stone, and it seems to hit something, and it stops and turns around.  It was repelled by some physical or mental force, you're not sure.  On the patio sits a large stone table, about 15 feet long and four feet wide, but no chairs are evident.  Back inside you go down the wide hall and find three more bedrooms, servants quarters, and another water closet, and a small door at the end of the hall leading outside.  Across from the large parlour is the main door, double doors which lead to another stone platform from which a few steps lead to the path you saw from upstairs.

Looking up, you see the building has a strange shape and style.  The roof is curved exotically and its eaves extend a good eight feet beyond the chalet's walls.

You suspect the entire thing is preserved and kept clean by magic of some kind.

You haven't found anyone at the chalet.

First going back to the library Zandor grabs up Boccarino's pack. He places anything he may have left laying around there in it, including the potion, and takes these with him. He the goes to patio. He pulls out his hemp rope and sees if he can toss the end of it out of the barrier.

Out of Character:
I'm checking to see if the barrier is one way or two way.
